Celebrate Idaho State, a CommUniversity event, set Feb. 10; focus is on athletics

POCATELLO – The sixth annual Celebrate Idaho State, a CommUniversity event, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Idaho State University Pond Student Union Building. This year’s event will focus on athletics.

Celebrate Idaho State is sponsored by CommUniversity and is free to the public. Features include food, a coloring contest, an inflatable playground, featured speakers, a pep rally for men’s basketball team and a chance to meet a variety of student athletes.

“This event is a great opportunity for ISU to host the community for an evening of free, family fun. This year, we have a lot of kid-specific giveaways and activities, but there will be something for everyone,” said Allyson Johnson, co-chair of CommUniversity. “You will find this year’s Celebrate Idaho State event much more interactive than in past years.”

The coloring contest is sponsored by Idaho Central Credit Union. A picture of Benny the Bengal will appear in the Idaho State Journal, beginning Feb. 2 for participants to color. Extras will be available at the event. Once the picture is colored it will be entered into a raffle to win a XBOX-One.

ISU Basketball Hall of Famer James Potter will be there to sign autographs along with the current ISU basketball players. There will be a pep rally at 5:15 p.m. for the men’s basketball team to prepare for the Portland vs. Idaho State game, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. All Celebrate Idaho State attendees will receive a free ticket to that game.

There will also be three guest faculty speakers. Starting at 5 p.m. Sports Science and Physical Education Professor Karen Appleby will speak on the “Importance of Sport/Physical Activity for Girls.” Registered Dietitian Natalie Christensen will speak on “Sport Nutrition,” at 5:30 p.m. Assistant Professor in Sport Science and Physical Education Dani Moffit will conclude at 6 p.m. with “Injury Prevention for the Weekend Warrior.”

Celebrate Idaho State will again award three $1,000 scholarships to current ISU students. The winners were selected through an essay competition and will be announced at the event.

Other activities include:
• Sport teams meet and greet
• Inflatable horse races
• Inflatable playground obstacle course
• The ISU Wellness Center will demonstrate and test for physical fitness standards
• A photo booth
• Meet Benny the Bengal
• Counseling and Testing Services will offer live demonstrations of biofeedback training
• Dietetics program will provide food/cooking demos in their portable kitchen
• Athletic training students will offer instruction on strengthening, stretching, and plyometric exercises to help prevent ACL injuries
• Dental hygiene will provide oral health games and prizes
• Alumni Relations will present memorabilia from ISU alums who were athletes at ISU

“The Pocatello community is very generous and supportive to ISU and this event is one way ISU can give back to our community. Idaho State has so many wonderful opportunities, this event gives the community a chance interact with some of our fantastic departments and programs,” said Valerie Davids, co-chair of CommUniversity.
