Winning student artwork to be displayed at Symphony’s Halloween matinee concert

POCATELLO — The Idaho State-Civic Symphony Association has announced the selection of artworks from more than 70 pieces submitted by public and private school students will accompany the movements from Gustav Holst’s “The Planets” to be presented during Idaho State University’s annual Halloween Family Concert matinee Oct. 31.

Winning artworks will be enlarged and projected onto a background screen behind the orchestra as they perform the movements represented. [Read more…]

Idaho State University 45th Women’s Club Holiday Fair Scholarship Fundraiser set Nov. 6-7 at ISU Pond Student Union Ballroom

POCATELLO — The 45th annual Idaho State University Women’s Club Holiday Fair Scholarship Fundraiser will be held Nov. 6, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Nov. 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the ISU Pond Student Union Ballroom.

Parking is free and there is no admission fee. All of the proceeds go to ISU student scholarships. Artists donate 20 percent of their sales to the club for scholarships. The event is hosted by the ISU Women’s Club, the oldest organization on campus established in 1923.

This year the Holiday Fair will have more than 40 artisan vendors who will offer their unique items to make your holiday shopping easier by providing gifts which are handcrafted here in Idaho. [Read more…]

Idaho State University has many fun, spooky and creative events taking place for Halloween 2015

POCATELLO – Who says the Halloween fun has to end when you are no longer old enough to trick or treat? Idaho State University has a variety of fun spooky events that most every college student can enjoy and the events listed below are also open to the public.

• Saturday Oct. 24

– Muggle Magic, 11a.m.-3p.m. – The Idaho Museum of Natural History at Idaho State University will host its annual Muggle Magic, which combines the iconic world of Harry Potter with natural science. Children will be introduced to wand making using Idaho native trees, meet toads and snakes and learn about Muggle creatures that look like dragons. Tickets are $8 for students 3-17 years old in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets are free for adults and children 0-2 years old. Idaho Museum of Natural History After Dark series kicks off with Oct. 29 panel on “Ghosts! Get into the Halloween Spirit.”

POCATELLO – The Idaho Museum of Natural History on the Idaho State University campus will host its After Dark events beginning Oct. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. with “Ghosts! Get into the Halloween Spirit.”

A group of specialists will discuss audience questions concerning ghosts. Panel members include Steve Lawyer, ISU professor of clinical psychology; Steve Shropshire, ISU professor of physics; Lewis Thomas, ISU senior lecturer of cultural anthropology; and John Brian, Lisa Brian and Bret Yost of the Scientific Paranormal Investigative Research Organization of Pocatello. Idaho State University physics, Pocatello Kiwanis to host a Haunted Science Lab Oct. 24; open to school groups Oct. 19-23

POCATELLO — The Idaho State University Society of Physics Students, the Kiwanis Club of Pocatello and the ISU Department of Physics will host a Haunted Science Laboratory exhibit open to the public on Oct. 24 3-9 p.m. at the old Car Quest Warehouse, 1161 Wilson Ave. in Pocatello.

The Haunted Laboratory features interactive exhibits designed to delight, fright and educate kids of all ages. Exhibits include a Van deGraaf generator, lasers moving to music and lots of cool illusions with smoke and mirrors. [Read more…]

Free community hearing screenings Oct. 13 at ISU-Meridian Health Science Center

Get your hearing checked for free at a series of screenings beginning Oct. 13 at the Speech and Language Clinic at the Idaho State University-Meridian Health Science Center, 1311 E. Central Drive.

Free screenings are also set for Nov. 10, Dec. 8, Feb. 9, March 8 and April 5. Hours are 3-6 p.m. No appointment is necessary, and clinicians will see adults, teens and children as young as 3 years old. [Read more…]

POCATELLO – Idaho State University’s James Rogers Department of Communication, Media, and Persuasion, Department of Art and Department of English and Philosophy are joining together for the Pinyon Jay Press Open House set Oct. 2 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 256 of the Liberal Arts Building.

Idaho State University Department of Art graduate art students will give gallery talks Sept. 17 at Davis Gallery

POCATELLO – The Idaho State University Department of Art invites ISU faculty, staff, students and the Pocatello community to the John B. Davis Gallery Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. to hear students speak about their exhibited pieces and briefly discuss the direction of his or her work.

This presentation will accompany the current annual Graduate Student Exhibition “A Clean Act” that is on display through Sept. 18.

The John B. Davis Gallery is located on the first floor of the ISU Fine Arts Building.

Idaho State University to showcase retrospective art exhibition of alum in Pond Student Union Transition Gallery; reception set Sept. 1

POCATELLO – Idaho State University alumnus and Shoshone-Bannock artist Ramon Murillo will have a retrospective of his work featured in a ISU Pond Student Union Transition Gallery exhibit until Sept. 18.

Murillo graduated from ISU in 1980 and 1988. The exhibit features Murillo’s print paintings and mixed media works. The retrospective covers Murillo’s career work, his first painting dating back to 1979. This will be the first time that Murillo will see all of his artwork together in an exhibit.

There will be an opening reception on Sept. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Transition Gallery. Murillo will give a short talk about his prints at 6 p.m. [Read more…]

“Booker’s Dozen’ traveling exhibit of artists’ books at Oboler Library in September

POCATELLO – Idaho State University’s Eli M. Oboler Library will host the biennial traveling exhibition of artists’ books, “Bookers’ Dozen 2015,” during the month of September.

Sponsored by Idaho Center for the Book, the exhibit includes 13 unusual books by Idaho artists as well as national and international artists.

The Oboler Library will hold an opening reception on Sept. 3 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with commentary by ISU faculty members Naomi S. Adams, represented in the exhibit by her book “Nine”, and Paula Jull, founder of the Pocatello Book Arts Group, art director of the Guild of Bookworkers Journal, and advisory board member of ISU’s own Pinyon Jay Press.
